The Apiary EvolutionTegart Apiaries Ltd. was founded in 1971 as a honey producing farm. In the early years our stock of bees was replenished every spring from supplies imported from California in the United States. In 1978 efforts were taken to become self-sufficient in managing our bee stock. At first we tried wintering our bees in Northern Alberta, Canada, but soon found it more economical and reliable to winter our bees in southern British Columbia. |

The First StepWintering bees in Southern B.C. required transporting the bees about 800 miles and involved many long trips each year. We then experimented with smaller and smaller hive sizes, together with better feeding and handling systems. |

BreakthroughIn 1987 we then tried wintering our bees using a 5-frame styrofoam Nuc box designed in association with a polystyrene company here in Canada. Our first attempt was not without problems, but the bees wintered extremely well, demonstrating the potential of this new technology. |
